The Education Cannot Wait (ECW), is a multi-year resilience project funded by UNICEF through a consortium of four (4) national NGOs of Restoration of Hope Initiative (ROHI), Grow Strong Foundation (GSF), Center for Advocacy, Transparency, and Accountability Initiative (CATAI), and GOALPrime Organization of Nigeria (GPoN)), was launched to strengthen the resilience of children affected by the insurgency in northeast Nigeria through alternative means of learning using radio sets in the event of access loss due to other factors.

The project was designed not only to strengthen children’s resilience but also that of their parents through positive parenting sessions in which parents are educated on how to reduce the incidence of child abuse. The project addressed issues related to protection, particularly through referral pathways to other relevant organizations across the location of implementation, in order to reduce the incidence of child-related issues in the area and increase children’s school retention and continuity.

Positive parenting sessions were held in Ngala and Gwoza across the 15 schools and communities in the LGAs, with the help of volunteer teachers (VTS), CMEOs, and CRMs, to raise awareness about how to combat child labor, and abuse, and increase school retention among adolescent girls and boys throughout the area. Through the activity, CATAI demonstrated and shared knowledge with 5,316 (2,433 male and 2,883 female) parents about the importance of education, EORE, safe school declaration (SSD), replacing corporal punishment with positive discipline, giving children a positive upbringing, and highlighting the importance of education and the role of parents in ensuring children have access to quality education

Sensitization and awareness creation sessions were carried out to raise awareness among the people throughout the location about the reporting mechanisms and channels of PSEA, VAC, and GBV, with the goal of strengthening the knowledge and ability of parents and community stakeholders in ensuring school safety, addressing and reporting GBV cases within the location, and clearly discussing the issue of confidentiality. CATAI was able to reach 1130 (549 male and 581 female) parents within Gwoza and Ngala LGAs.

In line with the project activities, CATAI conducted bi-weekly community feedback coordination meetings in the locations, where key issues were discussed by the parents and various stakeholders.

5,000 scholastic and recreational materials were distributed in Gwoza and Ngala, resulting in an increase in school attendance and retention at the center. It also served as a support for children who found it very difficult to interact with their peers due to a traumatic condition.

Other activities such as PSEA, VAC, GBV, and SSD training were provided to educational stakeholders, parents, community stakeholders, and volunteer teachers all throughout the project location in order to promote and strengthen their capacity on the role they need to play in reporting such issues when they occur within the community and schools, as well as how to go about the reporting where the issue of safeguarding was clearly stated, confidentiality issues were also explained, and their role as stakeholders in ensuring The training aimed at 100 people, with 50 male and 50 female participants, including LEA representatives, SBMCs, volunteer teachers, student representatives, CMEOs, and CRMs.
