Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in May 1999, armed non-state groups have significantly undermined the country’s internal security system, mainly using young men as foot soldiers. Borno State in northeast Nigeria has experienced significant structural and socio-economic challenges resulting from over a decade of insurgency in the region. The near absence of civil authorities in remote communities negatively impacts socio-economic services, leading to critical development gaps and community tensions.
